The University of Benin, also known as UNIBEN, is an accredited public research university located in Benin City, South-South Nigeria. The University of Benin was established in 1970, as an Institute of Technology. It was later accorded the status of a full-fledged University by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the 1st of July, 1971. The name Institute of Technology was later changed to the University of Benin in 1972 in a speech delivered by the then Military Governor of Mid-Western State, Col. S. O. Ogbemudia. Since then, the University has continued to grow and it currently operates two campuses, namely the Ugbowo campus and Ekenwan campus.

The University of Benin is known for being the first University in Nigeria to independently develop a Computer Based Test (CBT) Software in 2015. This CBT software is used for the conduct of UNIBEN’s Post UTME and other internal examinations. UNIBEN’s Public-Private Partnership engagements have led to several memoranda of understanding with a host of institutions such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, the National Space Research and Development Agency and the University of Mississippi, USA. These memoranda have led to the designation of the university as a centre for the training of future accounting professionals and national leaders. UNIBEN was unanimously chosen to host the fourth international conference on gender; a conference that attracted political office holders, policymakers, gender rights advocates, non-governmental organisations and civil societies from within and outside the country. Uniben has a total enrolment of over 75,000 students.

The University of Benin provides several academic and non-academic facilities for its students. These facilities include a computer centre with a 520 person capacity, a cyber with 290 computers, a digital library with 78 computers, 5 multimedia classrooms with 25 computers each, a computer repair centre, a career development centre, an examination centre with 6 workstations, a teaching hospital, hostels, an auditorium and lecture halls. Some notable alumni of UNIBEN include Richard Mofe-Damijo (Nigerian Actor), Mitchell Elegbe (CEO of  Interswitch), James Ibori (former governor of Delta State), Babatunde Fashola (Federal Minister of Works and Housing), Bright Okpocha a.k.a Basketmouth (Nigerian comedian) and Amaju Pinnick (President of the Nigeria Football Federation).

Benin City is the capital and largest city of Edo State in southern Nigeria. Benin City is located in the tropical rain forest region of Nigeria. The kingdom of Benin began in the 900s when the Edo people settled in the rainforests of West Africa.
By the 1400s, they had created a wealthy kingdom with a powerful ruler, known as the Oba. Gradually, the Obas won more land and built up an empire. They also started trading with merchants from Europe. For 200 years Benin was very successful, but in the 1600s, the Obas began to lose control of their people. By the 1800s, Benin was no longer strong or united. The kingdom came to a sudden end in 1897, when a British army invaded and made it part of the British Empire. The Oba was captured and eventually allowed to live in exile until he died in 1914. However, the office of Oba continued to be recognized in colonial Nigeria. Eweka II built a new palace to replace the one that the British had destroyed. Later on, the Oba received Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom during her state visit to Nigeria in 1956. In 1966 he became Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. Till date, the Oba culture and royal family is still profoundly venerated in Benin, with the Oba held in higher esteem than any mere politician.

Benin City features a tropical climate with an average annual temperature of 26.1 °C. The indigenous people of Benin City are Edo; they speak the Edo language and other Edoid languages. The people of the city have one of the wealthiest dress cultures on the African continent and are known for their beads, body marks, bangles, anklets, and raffia work. The economy of Benin is dependent on subsistence agriculture and cotton. Cotton accounts for 40% of Benin’s GDP and roughly 80% of official export receipts.

Benin City is home to some of Nigeria’s institutions of higher learning, secondary and primary schools. The city possesses several Attractions that include the National Museum, the Oba Palace, Igun Street (Famous for bronze casting and other metal works) and the Benin Moats. The city is also the home of one of the oldest sustained monarchies in the world. The city has several markets and four main market days; Ekioba, Ekenaka, Agbado, and Eken. The Binis are known for bronze sculpture and their arts and craft, which are key items that are auctioned and sold during market days. The city encourages in and out movements through its Benin Airport that serves the city with four commercial airlines. Finally, the city has a national museum with several African and Nigerian relics that are worth visiting. The careful assessment of these facilities may serve as a strong point for considering the University of Benin as an alma mater.
