Strathmore University is a chartered private university located on the Madaraka Estate in Nairobi, Kenya. It was started in 1961, as an Advanced-level Sixth-Form College offering Science and Art, by a group of professionals who formed what is today known as the Strathmore Educational Trust. They were encouraged in this endeavour by Saint Josemaría Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei. In 1966 the first accountancy students joined the college in preparation for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) examination. This made Strathmore College at the time to be the sole academic and professional mid-level institution. By 1982 the College began evening courses in Accountancy, due to excessive demand. With the growth of the College, a new Campus Project at the Madaraka estate was launched in 1989. In 1993 Strathmore College merged with Kianda College and moved to the new campus. In 2002 Strathmore was awarded a Letter of Interim to operate as a University, and in 2008 it was awarded a charter to become a fully-fledged university. Its sole campus houses all its facilities.

Strathmore University ranks 6th on Webometrics ranking of Kenyan universities. The University is owned by the Strathmore Educational Trust (SET), a non-profit body. It was the first school pre-independence to offer multiracial and multi-religious education. It was also the first educational institution in Kenya to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification in Quality Management. The school runs an ACCA programme in correlation with its school of Accountancy. Strathmore has a reputation for excellence and wholesome education. It offers one on one student mentoring, and laptop access for all its undergraduate students. It counts over 5000 students enrolled in various programmes; over 200 academic staff and 400 administrative staff make for a total staff of over 600.

Strathmore University has a list of recommended hostels for its students’ accommodation needs. It, however, offers several other services to its students and staff, like a community service centre. It counts a furnished library with digital access and off-campus access. It equally runs a Chaplaincy under the supervision of Opus Dei. As a research-centred university Strathmore equally counts several centres, laboratories and institutes for research purposes. In addition, Strathmore possesses a Medical Centre accessible on campus, in a bid to deliver quality care to its students and staff.
Notable alumni from Strathmore University include Gideon Moi (senator), Idah Asin (lawyer), James Mworia (lawyer and accountant), Esther Passaris (social entrepreneur), Joseph Nanok (politician).

Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya. It is situated in the south-central part of the country, between the cities of Kampala and Mombasa. Inhabitants of Nairobi are called Nairobians. The city was founded by colonial authorities in 1899 as a railway town along the Mombasa-Uganda railway line, and quickly became a centre for the colony’s coffee and tea industry, growing under the British to replace Mombasa as the capital in 1907. Such growth persisted through the 1960s, angering the Maasai and Kikuyu people who wanted their land returned to them. This was the main bone of contention for the Mau Mau rebellion that lasted from 1952 to 1960. It remained the capital when Kenya gained independence in 1963 and quickly became the principal industrial centre of the country.
The total population of Nairobi is over 4.6 million, making it the largest city in the country. The city experiences a subtropical highland climate with two seasons of moderate rainfall, even as the seasons alternate between wet and dry. Average annual temperatures go from 25.4 degrees Celsius to 13.1 degrees Celsius. It is divided into 17 constituencies that are all represented by members of Parliament in the National Assembly. As far as its economy goes, the city is home to one of the largest stock exchanges in Africa – the Nairobi Securities Exchange – recognised as an overseas stock exchange in 1953 by the London Stock Exchange. It is also the regional headquarters of several international companies and organisations like General Electric, Young and Rubicam, Coca-Cola, and Airtel, all contained within its central business district. The city is a major financial capital of Africa, with the Greater Nairobi Metropolitan region generating about 60% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Nairobi boasts a vibrant urban culture, from music to literature and film, as well as gastronomy. It is home to several theatres, museums, and art centres. The city has been the setting of several novels and foreign films. It is also a popular venue for foreign musicians who tour Africa, having welcomed Bob Marley on his first-ever visit to Africa. Nairobi equally boasts established foreign communities from India and Pakistan as well as Somalia and Sudan.

The city of Nairobi is blessed with several landmarks and impressive infrastructure, recently experiencing a construction boom. Several skyscrapers can be seen towering over the city’s skyline. It has two parks, the Nairobi National Park and Uhuru Park, which provide the city with colourful touristic sites. Several global food chains can be found in the city, like KFC, Subway, Domino’s Plaza, Pizza Hut and Burger King. In a real reflection of its multicultural identity, Nairobi’s gastronomy caters to the various communities. It even hosts an annual restaurant week, offering dining packages at reduced prices.
The Moi International Sports Centre is the prime sports facility in Nairobi, and by extension, Kenya. It was used to host the 1987 All Africa Games, and it comprises a stadium (second largest in the region after Tanzania’s), a gymnasium, and an aquatics sports centre. The city has several times hosted international competitions, ranging from rugby to cricket. Football is the most popular sport in the city, and the local Kenyan Premier League counts three teams from Nairobi.
Nairobi is served by highways that look to ease the daily motor traffic in the metropolitan area. It also has several railway lines, being a former railway town. It is equally home to the largest airport in Kenya, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The city also serves as an educational hub, with several renowned higher institutions located in or around the town, such as the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, the Multimedia University of Kenya, Daystar University, the Technical University of Kenya, the East African School of Aviation, United States International University – Africa, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Nairobi is steeped in a rich culture, heritage and history, and this reflected in its people. The city is a mix of culture – religions, traditions, local beliefs. The city is filled with Kenya’s most important museums, home to masterpieces of African Art centuries old. Nairobi’s sustainable development rests on upholding long-term economic and social growth, which has helped raise the standard of living of the people in the city. Known as the Green City in the Sun, it provides all the basics needed for a healthy life such as food, shelter, sanitation, water, good roads and transportation. The cost of living in Nairobi is in the mid-range, with monthly costs for a single person being over 56000 shillings. Nairobi’s multiculturalism and diversity in accommodating its inhabitants should prove favourable to students considering the pursuit of their education in the city, as the city caters to a wide variety of needs.
