St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) is a private university in Mwanza, Tanzania. It was founded by the Catholic Bishops of Tanzania in 1998 as a secular, non-profit private institution. SAUT is the successor of the Nyegezi Social Training Institute that was founded in 1960. It was entrusted to the Tanzania Episcopal Conference in 1975, and in 1998 it served as the nucleus of the new catholic university, St. Augustine University of Tanzania. SAUT was accredited in 2002. The University is divided into two campuses. The main campus houses the administrative building and a Faculty, and the Malimbe campus is home to 4 other faculties.

St. Augustine University of Tanzania was founded in a bid to embrace the ideals of the Gospel message as it comes to the world through the Word of God and through Catholic Tradition and the teaching Church. In matters of faith and morals, the University acknowledges the authority of Canon Law and the Apostolic Constitution “Ex-Corde Ecclesiae” for Catholic Universities. SAUT runs a number of projects like the Probiotic Yoghurt Kitchen and the SAUT farm project. The university attracts students from East and Central Africa. It counts over 15000 students enrolled at the University and an academic staff of about 300.

SAUT offers a number of services alongside regular accommodation and administrative services. The University possesses a Library as well as IT Services. It equally runs a Radio Station, Radio SAUT Fm, as part of the Journalism and Mass Communication programme, which includes a TV Studio as well. In 2006 SAUT established a Human Rights Centre as a response to the rise in violations of fundamental human rights. Another vital service offered by SAUT is Ecowater, which allows students novel and cheap hydration options on campus. SAUT also has flexible meeting and conference facilities, quality accommodation and spacious communal areas, making it an ideal choice for conferences and events.
Notable alumni from SUAT include Zamaradi Mketema (radio personality), Moses Machali (politician), Ezekia Wenje (politician), Mary Machuche Mwanjelwa (Member of Parliament).

Mwanza is a port city on the southern shore of Lake Victoria in north-western Tanzania. It is the second largest city in Tanzania after Dar es Salaam, with a population of 800000. It is also the capital of the Mwanza Region. Mwanza is constituted mostly of the Sakuma ethnic group, living mainly in the city area. The population grew from a few hundred thousand in 1978 to over 700000 in 2012.  Mwanza has a tropical savanna climate with relative consistent temperatures throughout the year, at about 23.5 degrees Celsius. It has a wet season from October to May, and a dry season over 4 months. Fishing is one of the major occupations of inhabitants of Mwanza, with five fish processing plants in the area, which serve the economy.

Mwanza is a hotbed of tourism, and as such is home to several sites and landmarks. The Saanane Island National Park is located on a rocky island in Lake Victoria, a few metres from the centre of Mwanza. The Serengeti National Park is located about 150 kilometres from Mwanz, and several tour operators organize day trips to the Park. The Sukuma Museum is also a popular spot, giving an overview of the history, culture, language and architecture of the Sukuma tribe. Mwanza is served by a regional airport, the Mwanza Airport. The city is also connected by railway to other major cities in Tanzania. It also boasts a stadium and a local football team. The St. Augustine University of Tanzania is the main university in Mwanza, offering a good choice for students considering education in the city.
