Mount Kenya University (MKU)) is a private university located in Thika, Kiambu County, Kenya. It is one of the largest private universities in Kenya. Mount Kenya University (MKU)) is a private university located in Thika, Kiambu County, Kenya. It is one of the largest private universities in Kenya. It was founded in 1996 as the Thika Institute of Technology. In 2000 it developed into a commercial college. It was later recognised as a full-fledged higher institution, becoming the first private institution in Kenya to train pharmaceutical technologists. The University was established as a full-fledged privately funded university by 2006, and it was awarded its charter in 2011. MKU currently runs 11 campuses across the national territory.

Mount Kenya is ranked in the 14th position of Webometrics Ranking of Top Kenyan Universities. MKU operates a Research and Innovation Directorate that has seen the University contribute to a platform that fosters the co-existence of religion and science.  MKU is known for its multi-campus network, offering higher education to a large part of East Africa, with campuses and centres found in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. It is also a member of several Higher Institution Associations like the Association of African Business Schools and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Mount Kenya University operates several facilities across its campuses. It has an award-winning University library and boasts imposing infrastructure at its main campus. MKU’s medical school counts 4 laboratories; the University is a proponent of online digital learning, offering Wi-Fi internet access across all its campuses. It also has accommodation facilities and a student centre and runs an integrated sickbay for the university community. MKU employs 24-hour CCTV camera surveillance and night patrols by security agencies to maintain security in and around the University. It also offers a fleet of buses available for academic and social trips.
MKU counts as one of its notable alumni John Paul Mwirigi, the youngest ever Kenyan member of Parliament.

Mount Kenya University strives to admit those applicants who are best prepared to benefit from and contribute to MKU academic community. Admission specialists will review your application and supporting documentation carefully to assess your overall academic preparation. In evaluating your application, the University will consider the following factors:

  • Mean Grade scores achieved in High School
  • Grades earned in core subjects depending on the specific programmes in which you are interested
  • Additional information provided in support of your application.

Before you apply for admission at MKU, you are encouraged to carefully consider the various degree and diploma programmes available, meet with an adviser and when you decide MKU is the place you want to be. Admission to MKU is on a first come first serve basis so be sure to complete your application early.

  2. Ksh.2,000 (Post-Graduate programmes) for East African applicants

Thika is an industrial town in Kiambu County, Kenya. It is located northeast of Nairobi, the capital. The town was a convenient resting spot between Nairobi and the upcountry highlands for settlers in the 19th century, with European settlers setting up farms and Asians, shops. The town was founded around a pillar-shaped monument that was erected by the British in the early 1900s. in 1924 it was given its status by the government gazette. When Kenya gained independence in 1963 it was elevated to a municipality, and its first mayor was chosen in 1968.
The town has a subtropical highland climate, with sunshine most of the year and an average annual temperature of 19.8 degrees Celsius. March and April are the hottest period, and July the coldest, with rains lasting from April to June. Thika is essentially an industrial town, with agricultural processing as its main economic activity, in fields like horticulture and pineapple, coffee, cooking oils and animal food processing. The town equally has a thriving textile industry, as well as car assemblies, cigarette manufacturing, bakeries, packaging and industrial chemicals.

Thika is home to the several waterfalls, the Chania Falls, Fourteen Falls and Thika Falls. It equally has a National Park, Ol Donyo Sabuk that lies in the southeast. It operates a limited cargo railway service. Bidco Oil Refineries and Del-Monte Pineapples, two multinational companies have branches in Thika, as do several world brands.
The town equally counts 3 universities and several colleges, as well as hundreds of secondary and primary schools. Not only is it an industrial town, but it is also an educational hub, suitable for students thinking of studying in the town.
