Covenant University, also known as CU, is a private Christian university located in Ota, Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. The drive that led to the founding of Covenant University, came a month after the dedication of Faith Tabernacle the largest church auditorium in the world. After some consultations and meetings, the University was inaugurated and to make it legal, a committee tendered the application for a private university operating license to the National Universities Commission (NUC) by December 1999. On July 15, 2001, the NUC assessment team came for a final inspection of the university’s facilities and programmes. The visit is what led to the Federal Government’s approval of Covenant University on January 16, 2002. This approval has been registered as the fastest in the history of the 16 applications for the establishment of private universities filed to the NUC. On Sunday, January 27, 2002, the foundation stone of the permanent site was laid and building begun in March of the same year. Just eight months later, the first batch of students was welcomed into the university.

Ota is a city in Ogun State, Nigeria. Folklore has it that Olofin’s children; Osolo and Eleidi originally founded Ota after migrating south from Isheri. Ota later became famous in the production and sale of cocoa. In 1842, Ota was subdued by Abeokuta, in the drive to expand the Egba nation. Nonetheless, Ota held a semi-independent status within the Egba kingdom and remained the capital of the Awori people.
The city of Ota began started to grow into an industrial city by the ’90s. Today due to the economic development planning, the lobbying of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and Chief Bisi Onabanjo (former governor of Ogun State), Ota is officially designated as an industrial town.  In Ota, the wet season is overcast meanwhile the dry season is partly cloudy and hot year-round.
Ota has six main ethnic groups, namely; Egba, Ijebu, Remo, Egbado, Awori and Egun. The language of the majority of the people of Ogun State is Yoruba, but this is however broken into scores of dialects. A remarkable feature of the Ota people is their respect for several festivals and belief in traditional deities. The city of Ota has an economy that is highly dependent on businesses and industries present in the city.

Ogun State is reputed for having the highest number of registered universities in Nigeria (nine in all) and five new private universities. Several sections of the town are dominated by industries and businesses, fertile places for students in search of jobs or internships. The city has the Birikisu Sungbo shrine is a tourist centre where Muslims all over the world converge for prayers. The city has the MKO Abiola Stadium; a 35,000 person capacity stadium that is mostly used for football. The Murtala Muhammed International Airport services flights both in and out of the city. Finally, the city has a host of well-equipped hospitals staffed with professional medics. These facilities partake in the wellbeing of the Ota inhabitants, and it can serve those wishing to study in the Covenant University.
