Kitwe is a city in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. It is the third-largest city in terms of infrastructure, and the second largest in terms of size and population, after Lusaka. The city was founded in 1936 during the construction of the railway by the Cecil Rhodes’ company. It was first established as a more supportive extension of the copper-mining centre at Nkana, but as the mines expanded so did Kitwe, building up its size and significance over the years till it surpassed Nkana as the main centre. The Rhodesia Railways reached the city in 1937, extending to Cape Town as well the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kitwe experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot and humid summers, and cold to mild winters. The majority of the city’s population is made up of Christians, but the city also counts Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Jews among its population. The city is a commercial hub, with a good number of banks taking up residence in the city centre. It also counts several local and international stores like Shoprite, Nando’s, Pick and Pay, and Wimpy’s. it counts two major markets – the Chisokone market and the Obote Market. These commercial spots contribute to the economy of the city that is already a base for several mining operations in Zambia.

Kitwe is a reputed for its industrial areas, being the home of complex mines in the north-western sections of the city. Also, there are several schools and higher education institutions in the city, from privately owned international colleges to public universities. The Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation acts as an interdenominational centre that acts as a place of worship, study, consultation and reconciliation. The city boasts a good health care system, with the presence of several health facilities and Hospitals. The landscape around the city serves as an attractive mixture of woodland, farmland and rivers. The surrounding facilities include a boating club, a motor cross racing track, canoeing, table tennis, and picnicking venues. The city equally counts two shopping malls among its landmark attractions.
With its balance of natural sights and thriving economy, as well as a strong educational foundation and adequate health care, Kitwe is a good choice for students seeking to further their education in the city.
