ABOUT THE CITY OF LUSAKA
Lusaka, Zambia is the capital and largest city of Zambia. Lusaka is located in the southern part of the central plateau. It was founded by the British government in 1913 as a remote outpost for British administrators and farmers. In 1935, Lusaka became the capital of what is now the Northern Rhodesia Colony. Its designation as capital brought about major development and infrastructure to the city. Most of Lusaka’s residents were European and the Indigenous Africans working in the city were forced to live on its outskirts. Upon independence, the new Zambian government built several council-houses to accommodate black residents, many of whom worked for the government or in the copper industry. By 1966, Lusaka had emerged as the centre of anti-colonial resistance for Southern Africa. The city became a haven for African nationalists who organised independence movements in neighbouring Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, and South Africa. Finally, in 1969, Lusaka was the country that ended up hosting the 5th Summit Conference of East and Central African States. Lusaka features a humid subtropical climate. Its temperature is typically high in October (24.4 °C) and very low in the month of July (16.0 °C). Lusaka’s culture is hugely dominated by festivals. These festivals are often small closed ceremonies that include a group of men or women, or big ceremonies involving the entire community. Other relevant features of Lusaka people are seen in their singing, dancing, attires and dialect. The city is one of the fastest developing cities in southern Africa with a GDP of over 23.137 billion. It mainly produces textiles, shoes, processed foods, and cement.

Lusaka is the centre of both commerce & governmental activities, a fact that persuade rural Zambians to migrate to the city in search of jobs and dreams. The city’s markets are a hive of activity with thousands of stalls, shops and businesses set up and upgraded every day. It is an enabling grown for an array of businesses including motor spares dealership, restaurants, hairdressing, fruit-selling and rows & rows of “salaula” (discarded cloths from the West). It is a sprawling, metropolis with many multi-storey buildings and notable institutions such as the Zambian National Assembly Building, the Lusaka National Museum and the Mulungushi International Conference Centre. There are several sports clubs in Lusaka that offer amenities for golf, tennis, polo, swimming and squash. Lusaka is connected to the country’s four main highways heading north, south, east and west. The Kenneth Kaunda International Airport services flights in and out of the town. Finally, the city has several hospitals that are well-equipped and staffed with professional medics. Lusaka is an attractive environment for those wishing to study in one of the fastest-growing metropolia in Africa.
