Higher Education in Mauritius

Types of Universities:
Higher education in Mauritius includes colleges, universities and other technical institutions. The Government of Mauritius aims to develop the country into a centre for higher education. Education reform is currently underway at the pre-primary, primary, and secondary levels, and the Government has now turned its attention to the higher education sector.  The sector is managed by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) which has the responsibility for allocating public funds, and fostering, planning and coordinating the development of Mauritius universities education and training.

Mauritius has a number of universities and other institutions of higher learning. There are 4 state universities, 2 private universities and 38 Tertiary educational institutes. Following are the 6 most demanded universities of Mauritius:

Academic Year:
This varies from one University to another. However, in general, the academic year is divided into 2 semesters as follows:

  1. Semester 1: From August to December
  2. Semester 2: From January to July.

Mid December to mid January and mid-July to mid-August are usually holidays. There is no standard academic calendar for universities as each university is free to set its own calendar.

General Application Requirements:
For admission into an undergraduate degree, Mauritius universities generally require you to present proof of completing one of the following requirements:

  1. Attach SC, HSC and any other relevant Certificates and transcripts. Kindly bring your original certificates so that copies can be certified
  2. Attach on academic reference. On Letterhead paper or with an official stamp:

– Either a School Leaving Certificate

– Or a Written reference from a former School teacher

  1. Attach a copy of your National Identity Card (Both sides.) If student is under 18 years of age, provide a copy of the data page of passport or copy of birth certificate.
  2. The Application documents will be processed. It shall take no more than 3 working days unless an applicant is requesting entry on to Year 2 or Year 3, then it may take up to 2-3 weeks.
  3. A Conditional Offer Letter will be issued.

– Payment details and methods are stated on the Conditional Offer Letter. Please add your student number as reference if paying by bank transfer.

  1. 2 Passport size photograph are requested.

Other necessary documents, like passport, recommendation paper, conformational paper from the university and accommodation conformation is needed as per respective university demand.

Program Duration:

*Higher Certificate: usually takes 1 year to complete.
*National Diploma: usually takes 2 years to complete.
*Bachelors Degree: usually takes 1- 3 years to complete.
*Honors Degree (Bachelors with Honors): usually takes 4 years to complete. It is a bachelor’s degree plus an extra year of study.
*Masters Degree: Usually takes 1-2 years after an Honors degree.
*Doctorate Degree (PhD): usually takes 3-5 years after a Master’s degree.

    The cost of living in Mauritius is much cheaper if you come from the first world. For one person, per month:
    Food: $100 (if you buy groceries and cook for yourself and as an example, a loaf of fresh white bread (500g) will cost $0.52)
    Transport: Benefit from free transport for students.
    A meal in a good restaurant per person would cost $6.64. Cinema ticket costs about $7.25.
    Apartment cost: one bedroom in the city center-$375 and outside of the city center will lower the price by $125 or so. Again, everything really depends on you and how much you spend.

    A non-citizen wishing to study in Mauritius should in the first instance secure a seat in a tertiary educational institution or TVET institution registered respectively with Tertiary Education Commission or the Mauritius Qualification Authority, hereinafter referred to as recognized tertiary educational institution or TVET institution. Then the following documents will be needed.

    1. Form “Application to Enter Mauritius””duly filled in and signed by the applicant;
    2. Two recent passport size photographs of the applicant;
    3. Photocopy of the bio-data pages of the passport of the applicant;
    4. Original letter of admission in a recognized educational establishment or TVET institution
    5. Details of duration of the course and confirmation from the Tertiary Education Commission or Mauritius Qualifications Authority that the chosen course is a full time or part time.
    6. Documentary evidence of availability of funds or financial capacity to meet costs of study and stay in Mauritius.
    7. A medical certificate certifying that the applicant is not suffering from any contagious or infectious disease. A test for HIV, Hepatitis B and a chest X ray should be done at any private medical laboratory/clinic/hospital in Mauritius and the tests results and Chest X ray report should be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office not later than one month after arrival.
