Introduction
Tourism is an important economic industry in Kenya, with speculation of becoming a leading contributor towards the achievement of Vision 2030. It is also a non-consumptive activity whose business may promote conservation of natural resources especially in the non- arable land that covers approximately all Kenyan land.
This could provide an avenue for economic diversification, and reduce over-reliance on agriculture while also creating jobs directly and indirectly for Kenyans. Bachelor of Tourism Management programme aims at developing expertise through management level training with the purpose of budding entrepreneurship skills in the tourism industry.
Philosophy
Develop specialised labour in tourism management for enhanced tourists’ satisfaction and business productivity.
Rationale
Tourism prioritisation in Kenya is an important strategy to achieve the economic pillar of vision 2030. Tourism development on effectively minimise overreliance on agriculture, enhance communities incomes while creating accessibility to marginalised destinations. In order to achieve these benefits from tourism, there is need to develop local experts, who can plan for sustainable development.
There is an urgent need to develop training at management level in order to address the challenges facing the tourism business.. Tourism training at management level requires a curriculum which develops entrepreneurial skills. Besides, it remains important to provide a programme which assures the graduates of diverse job opportunities while satisfying the industry needs.
Bachelor of Tourism Management is thus a comprehensive discipline which is market driven, demand propelled and sustainable development oriented. The programme will provide a differentiated syllabus that will produce graduates capable of providing quality service delivery hence promoting competency in the tourism and hotel industry.
Goal
The programme focuses on both theoretical and practical facets of tourism as a core study. This is expected to address the training needs of the industry, student and community while promoting capacity building. The program targets students who aspire to develop a career in managing tours, travel, hotel and restaurant operations.
The programme will provide graduates with a wide range of employment opportunities in airlines, tour firms, wildlife protected areas, nature parks, hotels, restaurant, and community bond tourism enterprises, conservation education centres, visitor centres, cultural heritage centres, museums, National Tourism Organisations and service operations such as banks, insurance companies.
Duration, Structure, Mode and Methods of Delivery
The duration of the programme is four academic years including field attachments which will be distributed within 8 semesters. 15 lecture hours will contribute to 1 C.F. while 30 practical hours shall contribute to C.F. depending on the course.
A student mug cover a minimum of 120 Credit factors that will consist of Lecture and Practical hours. A student must have covered a minimum of 120 Credit factors in order to graduate. The programme delivery will be on full-time and part- time basis. The course will be conducted through lectures, practicals, workshops, Problem-based teaming sessions, discussions and field work.
The media for curriculum delivery shall include print outs, modular books, and e-books. Audio-visual media may be used in delivery in foreign languages.
Admission Requirements
The requirements to be admitted for this programme is a mean grade of at least C+ at KCSE level or its equivalent qualification. The applicant must also have passed with at least grade C+ (plus) in English or Kiswahih. The applicant may be admitted if he/she has bridged in the above relevant subjects. Holders of Diploma in Tourism and Hotel Management or relevant disciplines from institutions recognised by CUE and Chuka University Senate may be admitted.
Application Guidelines
Applications should be on official forms available at the University Main Campus at Chuka, Igembe Campus at Ntuene or Keigoi High School, Embu Campus in Embu Town, Chogoria Campus at Nturiri High School, Tharaka Campus at Gatunga High School, OR Website: www.chuka.ac.ke; A Non-refundable fee of KES 3000 for Phd programmes, KES 2,000 for degree and diploma programmes and KES 1000 for certificate courses will equally be deposited.
The following documents should be made available:
– Originals & a copy of all Transcripts, Diplomas or Certificates (All originals, where necessary, will be returned)
– One recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of the National Identity Card or Birth Certificate
NOTE:
– Preferred Campus should be indicated on the application form
– Certified copies of certificates and original fee payment receipt MUST be attached to the application form and returned latest two weeks prior to the commencement dates given for the programmes
