Introduction
Sociology is a social science focusing on sociology, social life, social causes and consequences of human behaviour. It offers valuable preparation for students wishing to excel in various careers and professions. The Bachelor of Arts in Sociology builds knowledge and skills and attitudes in understanding societies, the way society is organize and the social problems facing it.
It is designed to deepen critical understanding of the strategies, processes, techniques and issues involved in taking ideas for development and turning them into practical realities with identifiable outcomes and benefits. The course provides an excellent basis for career development in such diverse areas in the public and private sector.
Sociology is a popular interdisciplinary subject combination for students planning to join professions such as law, business, architecture, medicine, social work, community development, politics and public administration.
Philosophy
The study of sociology is an invitation to reflect on the role of normative social life by looking at it sociologically. Self reflection is a fundamental aspect of sociology’s scientific tasks and asking of key sociological questions.
Rationale
Sociology rigorously studies society to investigate structures of groups, organizations, societies and how people interact in various contexts. By studying sociology learners develop critical awareness and understanding of social issues in both local and global context and making sense of the world around them.
It helps learners see that social structures, institutions, and processes profoundly shape who they are and have the ability to influence the present and coming social futures. Sociology helps learners to understand themselves in relation to other people and larger social institutions and processes.Students will be better equipped to think and act in more socially and ethically responsible manner, by putting themselves in the situation of others and imagine how society can be improved.
Duration, Loading, Structure and Mode of Delivery
The BA in Sociology programme offers two degree options 3.3.1.1. For those who wish to major/specialize in Sociology and 3.3.2.2. for those combining Sociology with other subjects. The programme is designed for students who wish to specialize in the field of sociology.
It also serves as a preparation for graduate work in several specialized areas such as Social Psychology, Social change and Development, Collective Behaviour, Criminology and Disaster Management.The programme requires a total of twenty nine courses from sociology including a research project. Nineteen of these must be core courses and ten options.
In addition, a student should satisfy the University common courses regulation, where a student is expected to take a total of 18 C.Fs having taken six (6) courses out of ten (10) University common courses. The programme is designed for students who wish to combine Sociology with other disciplines or subjects.
The programme requires a total of nineteen courses from Sociology. Fifteen of these must be core and four options. In addition, students must fulfill the University requirement for common core courses as indicated in the 3.3.1.1. programme above.The course will be taken on full-time basis. The course will be delivered in form of lectures, discussions, and field visits.
Admission Requirements
All candidate admitted to Bachelor of Arts with particular focus on Sociology must satisfy the minimum common entrance requirements of Chuka University which is currently C+

Applications should be on official forms available at the University Main Campus at Chuka, Igembe Campus at Ntuene or Keigoi High School, Embu Campus in Embu Town, Chogoria Campus at Nturiri High School, Tharaka Campus at Gatunga High School, OR Website: www.chuka.ac.ke; A Non-refundable fee of KES 3000 for Phd programmes, KES 2,000 for degree and diploma programmes and KES 1000 for certificate courses will equally be deposited.
The following documents should be made available:
– Originals & a copy of all Transcripts, Diplomas or Certificates (All originals, where necessary, will be returned)
– One recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of the National Identity Card or Birth Certificate
NOTE:
– Preferred Campus should be indicated on the application form
– Certified copies of certificates and original fee payment receipt MUST be attached to the application form and returned latest two weeks prior to the commencement dates given for the programmes
Expected Learning Outcomes
On completion of degree in Sociology the learners students should be able to:Apply the acquired knowledge and skills to solve social problems.Demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues in social, economic and political environment. Undertake sociological research in order to inform on Social Policy.
