Programme Overview

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES AND ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Regulations pertaining to course and dissertation evaluation shall be as per General University Examination Regulations and Guidelines for degree and non-degree programmes of Sokoine University of Agriculture.

MSc degree in Post-harvest Technology and Management will be awarded By the end and successfully passing of all core courses and selected elective courses in year one that make a minimum of 120 credits(1200 ‘NOTIONAL’ OR ‘AVERAGE LEARNING’ hours) and MSc dissertation with a minimum of 60 credits. The minimum time for full time students to complete their degree programme shall be 2 years. Assessment criteria for various components of examinations shall be as per SUA general regulation and guidelines.

Candidates who have completed coursework but could not meet the requirement for MSc degree due to various reasons will qualify for an exit award which is a postgraduate diploma.

YEAR I

First Semester:
Core courses
Storage Technology I, 9 credits
– Design of Processing Plants for Agricultural Products, 10 credits
– Food Quality and Safety Management, 10 credits
– Research Planning, Experimentation and Statistics, 10 credits
Entrepreneurship, 9 credits

Elective Courses
– Properties of Biological Materials, 9 credits
Advanced Heat and Mass Transfer, 9 credits
– Processing of Cereals, Pulses, Oil seeds and Fibre Crops, 8 credits
– Agricultural Systems Modelling and Simulation, 7 credits

Second Semester:
Core Courses
Storage Technology II, 9 credits
– Management of Post- harvest System, 8 credits
– Advanced Agricultural Process Engineering, 10 credits
– Food Packaging, Transportation and Marketing, 10 credits
– Research Innovation Management and Commercialization, 10 credits

Elective Courses
– Fruit and Vegetable Processing Technology, 10 credits
– Bioenergy Systems and Technology, 8.5 credits
– Quantitative Methods and Operational Analysis, 10 credits
– Meat and Fish Technology, 15 credits

Proposal development
MSc. Research Proposal Development, 15 credits

YEAR 2
The second year will be for research work which will have a total of 60 credits.
Semester III and IV
– MSc Dissertation, 45 credits

Admission Requirements

The Admission regulations for Masters Degrees as stipulated in “Regulations and guidelines for higher degrees” of Sokoine University of Agriculture shall apply.
The MSc. in PTM degree programme is open to applicants with a background in bioprocess, post-harvest technology, agricultural engineering, food sciences and technology, biotechnology, process engineering, or related field.

http://www.sua.ac.tz/postgraduate-application-forms. Application forms can also be requested from the Director’s Office through drpgs@sua.ac.tz or postgraduate.students@sua.ac.tz. Such dully-filled forms can be returned physically or mailed to the undersigned together with evidence of payment of Tanzanian Shillings TZS 50,000/= or US$ 20 for international students as application fee (normal application ) or TZS 80,000/= or US$50 for international students (for all late applications ). Payments should be made through A/C NO. 0150076769860 CRDB Bank: Swift Code No CORUTZTZXXX.

(b) Online application through http://suasis.sua.ac.tz:9092/index.php/welcome. Make sure that all relevant academic and financial documents are attached before final submission is made.

Tuition Fees per year for Tanzanian Students = 3,200,000 TZS
Tuition Fees per year for International Students = 9,658,862 TZS

NB: The Tuition fees per year for all Students is an addition of the First Semester Fees: 3,300,000 TZS (Tanzanian Students), 4,325 USD (International Students) PLUS the Second Semester Fees: 3,100,000 TZS (Tanzanian Students), 4,025 (International Students), then Divided by TWO.
