Programme Overview

The programme shall focus on educational practitioners who require relevant knowledge, skills and values to be effective in the pedagogy of Physics Education. The clientele for this programme will be researchers, curriculum designers, developers, implementers and evaluators in Physics Education.  The program in pedagogy for Physics Education is intended to improve strategic thinking, eliminate wastage and add value in teaching, management and evaluation of Physics Education.

This programme shall enable the learner:

(i)    Acquire advanced knowledge, values and skills in Physics Education.

(ii)   Apply learning theories in the teaching of Physics Education.

(iii)  Examine trends and issues relevant to Physics Education.

(iv)  Develop competence necessary for carrying out research in Physics Education.

Curriculum

The degree programme has two options: course work, examination and project as option one and course work, examination and thesis as option two.

Face to Face teaching mode
The programme shall be offered for a minimum period of four semesters and a maximum period of twelve semesters.

  1.  The programme shall be offered by coursework, examinations and project or thesis.
  2. The course shall be conducted through lectures, discussion groups, seminars and assignments.
  3. The programme shall comprise 18 course units each of 60 contact hours.
  4. Candidates will be required to take all the eighteen course units offered except where exemption has been permitted.
  5. There will be full residential sessions for face-to-face teaching in a semester of 15 weeks.
  6. There will be school based residential face-to-face sessions where two holiday sessions of 4 weeks will constitute a semester.
  7. There will be evening and weekend face-to-face sessions in a semester of 15 weeks.
  8. A candidate shall write either a project equivalent to 4 units or a thesis equivalent to 8 units. The project or thesis must target a specific area of specialization in Physics Education.
  9. A candidate who writes a project shall take 14 taught course units.

A candidate who writes a project will take 5 core units in the first semester, 2 core and 3 elective units in the second semester, 4 units and writes the project proposal in the 3rd semester and writes the project in the 4th semester.

  1. A candidate who writes a thesis shall take 10 taught core course units.
  2. A candidate who writes a thesis will take 5 core units in the first semester, 2 core and 3 elective units in the second semester and writes the proposal and thesis in the 3rd and 4th semesters.
  3. A candidate shall be allowed to register for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 course units per semester.

Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) mode
The programme will be offered by Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) mode. This will involve various media of delivery as follows:

  1. Students will engage in self-study using multi-media approach in distance education with minimal face-to-face delivery during residential sessions.
  2. Face-to-face delivery mode shall not exceed one-third of the instructional time (60 hrs).
  3. Learner support services will include guidance and counseling using multi-media approach.
  4. The programme shall run for a minimum of four semesters each of 15 weeks and a maximum of twelve semesters from the date of registration.
  5. Written self-instructional study modules issued at registration time will consist of:

  7. Relevant literature
  8. Interactive devices and self tests
    1. Limited face-to-face sessions will provide an overview of the course at commencement of a semester, mid semester and revision period before examinations.
    2. Students will be served at the support study centres at the University of Nairobi and its regional resource centres where the following services will be offered:
  1. Access to information through computers and the e-learning platform
  2. Library services
    1. Immediately after registration students will be introduced to the following:
  1. Orientation on ODeL delivery
  2. Study in reading and computer skills
  3. Time management and techniques of handling assignment
  4. Mentorship, guidance and counseling
  5. Emphasis on the use of regional resource centres as the link between University of Nairobi and students in: registration, collection of study materials, receipt of results and programme information such as timetables and schedules for regional meetings.
Admission Requirements

**The common regulations for the Master’s degrees in the University of Nairobi and the School of Education shall apply.
**The following shall be eligible for admission into the Master of Education (Physics Education):
– A holder of Bachelor of Education (BEd Science with physics major or minor) degree with at least Upper Second Class honours degree of the University of Nairobi or its equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
– A holder of Bachelor of Science degree (Physics) of the University of Nairobi with at least an upper second class honours and Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) or equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
– A holder of lower second class degree in education (Physics) obtained from the University of Nairobi and two years teaching experience or any other equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate.
– A holder of a pass degree in Bachelor of Education (Physics) from the University of Nairobi and five years teaching experience or any other qualification recognized by the Senate.
– A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields with Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).
