The need for modern evidence-based medical social work services by medical social workers with impeccable case management capacities is on the rise. This is due to the high prevalence of modern day chronic non-communicable and lifestyle diseases in Kenya as well as road traffic accidents disability and poverty.
The bachelor of science in medical social work will not only contribute in enhancing the standards of health care services in the region, but will also help institutions of higher learning churn out razor sharp researchers.
This is in line with the changing trends of healthcare services that now focus more on evidence-based practice of which medical social work education and practices embrace. The program will immensely contribute towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) 1, 3 and 8. These are to: “eradicate poverty in all its forms everywhere”, “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” and to “promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all” respectively by 2030.
Entry Requirements:
a) Meet minimum University entry requirements and obtained a mean grade of at least C+ at K.S.C.E. or its equivalent and passed with at least a “C “in the subject clusters indicated.
(i) Alternative A: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics or Physics, English or Kiswahili
(ii) Alternative B: Biology Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, English or Kiswahili
b) Candidates with prior learning in Medical Social Work, Social Work, Sociology or Psychology from a recognized Institution or its equivalent as recognized by JKUAT will upon admission and request in writing for evaluation of accumulated credit for transfer upon submission of official relevant documents as per the JKUAT University CATS Policy.
In addition, the candidate/s MUST be registered with Kenya Medical Social Workers Association (KEMSWA). Foreign trained Medical Social Workers must be registered with their respective Medical Social Workers bodies in their respective country of training. They must also be compliant with all the Medical Social Workers requirements in Kenya before registration.

Graduates are needed at all levels of health systems – Hospitals (Sub County, County and National Referral Hospitals), Health centers, Dispensaries and Community units, UN (WHO); NGOs, Research, Teaching; rehabilitation and psychiatric hospitals.
Other major employers include offices and clinics, school systems, home health agencies, nursing homes, community mental health centers, adult daycare programs, job training service programs and residential care facilities.

**EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
