Programme Overview

Programme description
The objectives of the programme are to:
•      Provide relevant, meaningful and interesting courses in History;
•      Equip students with pedagogical skills and dispositions to teach History in pre-tertiary and higher level institutions.
•      Engage students with the theoretical principles and practices that underlie the construction and study of History;
•      Expose students to the methods of historical research in order to develop their analytical abilities in resolving social problems

Admission Requirements

SSSCE Candidates
– Credit passes (A-D) in six subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, plus
– Credit passes in three (3) relevant elective subjects (i.e. Economics, Geography, Government, History, and Religious Studies).
WASSCE Candidates
i)    Credit passes (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, plus
ii) Credit passes in three (3) relevant elective subjects (i.e. History Economics, Geography, Government and Religious Studies).

C. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates
i)   Credit passes in three (3) relevant subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better) i. e. Economics, Mathematics, Geography, Government, History, and Religious Studies.
ii)  Also the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five (5) GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an arts subject for Science students.

D.   Higher National Diploma (HND) Candidates
i)    Candidates must have graduated with good HND certificate (at least 2nd Class Lower Division).
ii)  In addition, the applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience.

E.    Special Departmental Requirements
i.    Applicants must have taken History or Government and obtained a grade of at least C4
ii.   A pass of B3 (or its equivalent) or better in English will be an advantage

Mature Candidates
– Applicants must be at least 25 years by August 1 of the academic year one wants to enrol.
– Applicants must also pass both the general UEW and Departmental Entrance Examinations.

G. Diploma Holders
– Applicants must possess a Higher National Diploma or its equivalence in a relevant subject from a recognized institution.

HSchool Certificate/GCE ‘A’ Level Candidates
i) Applicants must have five (5) credits at GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics as well as two (2) ‘A’ Level passes other than General Paper in History and one other social science subject.

– One recent passport-size photograph

Applicants should note that:
-No application will be processed unless all requirements are fully met
– Any change of address must be communicated at once to the Dean, School of Graduate Studies
– A change of programme after submission of application forms will NOT be allowed
– ALL certificates and results slips other than those from the West African Examinations Council, the Universities in Ghana and Institutions accredited by the National Accreditation Board, should be cleared with the Accreditation Board and the evaluation report attached to the certificate(s)
