Programme Overview

The Masters training course is designed to provide an environment that helps the applicant develop and build their capacity to manage in a diverse and dynamic environment. The course will apply student-centred learning approaches and will expose a candidate to contemporary health management and leadership practices and practitioners at the national and global level.  The applicant will also be expected to provide leadership in management of preventive and promotive health services in a rapidly changing environment

The course will work towards attracting a candidate with diverse experience and backgrounds to reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the healthcare system. The course is targeted at those who aspire to be competent and professional managers within the healthcare system.

Curriculum

COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
The Master of Science in Leadership and Health Systems Management programme shall be offered under three modules: full time, part time and Open, Distance and e-learning (ODeL). The programme shall consist of coursework, field attachment and a research project. The programme will run for a minimum of 4 semesters of 15 weeks each and a maximum of 12 semesters.  Each semester will comprise 6 units of 60 hours each and the total number of units shall be 24.

Full time
The duration of the course shall be a minimum of 4 semesters and a maximum of 12 semesters of 15 weeks each.
Each applicant shall be required to take all the units in each semester
In the second year, each applicant will be required undergo an attachment through the 6 health systems building blocks guided by a logbook.
In the second year, each applicant will be required to undertake a project in one of the 6 health systems building blocks.

Part time
The duration of the course shall be similar to fulltime.
A candidate will be required to take at least 3 units per semester.

Open, distance and e-learning (ODEL)
The course structure and requirements through ODeL module remains the same as part-time. The mode of delivery through ODeL will be as follows:
Use of various media largely home or office-based
Written self instructional study modules issued at the registration time that include

  1. Study course materials (booklets etc)
  2. Relevant literature
  3. Interactive devices and self tests

Limited face to face lectures and practical sessions
Mediated technical learning materials including:

  1. Audio visual
  2. E-learning materials
  3. Video clips

Limited face-to-face sessions to provide overview of the course at commencement of semester, mid semester and revision period before examinations
Support study centres at University of Nairobi

(a) Access to information through computers at the University of Nairobi and other resources centres

(b) Use of libraries at the University of Nairobi and other institutions

Admission Requirements

The common regulations for the Master’s Degree of the University of Nairobi shall apply.
The following will be eligible for admission into the course:
Holders of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB), Bachelor of Dental Science (BDS), Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (B.Sc.), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) or equivalent degree from a University recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
Holders of a first degree in health related disciplines of upper second class or above from a University recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
Holders of a first degree of lower second class degree in health related disciplines with relevant Post Graduate Diploma
In addition to the academic qualifications above an applicant must have a minimum of two years working experience
Holders of a first degree of pass in health related disciplines with relevant Post Graduate Diploma and five years working experience
