Environment are the biophysical and social conditions affecting an organism. The quality of environment determine the quality of life of the organism. The underlying factors to environmental quantity and quality deterioration are mainly population growth; economic development, weak laws or lack of enforcement thereof and lack of awareness of environmental issues.
Since independence, Kenya’s economy has been base] on agriculture which has provided for most of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Most of the commercial agricultural production and population has been concentrated on the 20% of high potential area. The remaining 80% is and and semi-and land of marginal agricultural productivity.
In spite of the fragility of marginal lands, they serve as important biodiversity reservoirs, wildlife habitats, anthropogenic sites and landscape of great attraction. The countries population has been rising rapidly leading to increased demands for food production which compete with the increasing needs for fiber production, housing, commercial and industrial activities among others.
Expansion of these activities has led to land subdivision for settlement and farming and change of land use from agricultural to commercial and industrial. The rapid expansion of the country’s economy is espoused by the “Vision 2030” blueprint which aims at making Kenya an industrialized country by the Year 2030. In this Vision, many development projects are expected to be completed.
Among the most notable that are currently ongoing is the one million acre Ga Iona-Athi irrigation project, the Standard Gauge Railway and Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transit (LAPSSET) corridor. Others in the plan include Konza city, Turkana and Isiolo Resort cities. All these development projects and agricultural production will be competing for the same environmental resources and given that law enforcement has not been effective, partially due to lack of awareness, the quality of the environment will be compromised.
There is need to ensure that the quality of the environmental resources like water, air, soil and biodiversity are managed and protected for the current and future generations. This is to ensure that there is adequate quality and quantity of the resources for human health, provision of basic needs, habitat functions of the environment, and Wildlife protection of endangered species, among others in perpetuity.
Protection of the environment for quality human existence and sustainable development.
In the background of rising environmental challenges both old and new, there is need to ensure that there is always a team of highly qualified individuals who can manage environmental resources that we have sustainably and provide solutions that will ensure environmental protection.
The program “Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science” is well placed to produce graduates who understand the environment holistically, who understand the impacts of the vat.us activities on the environment and the best ways of countering them for posterity.
For a very long time, the environmental resources have been taken as free gifts with zero price attached to them and hence subject to misuse, overuse and degradation. Water pollution, waste dumping, destruction of forests and sensitive habitats, poaching of wildlife among other challenges have been rampart.
Although many of these problems can be better addressed by enforcing environmental laws, the lack of environmental experts who feel for the environment is one of the single most important contributor to lack of proper implementation of the laws. Many of the workers placed in charge of the venous sectors of the environment do not have the deep concern for the environment hence the continued degradation.
The BSc. in Environmental Science of Chuka University intends to produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable in safeguarding the environment but are interested in the sustenance of the environment for the present and figure generations. There is need for trained environment custodians in order to provide safety valves to our production, manage the ecological systems that are highly susceptible to stress and monitor environmental quality.
There is also need to train environmental.ts who are able to provide advisory services on the overall use, conservation and enhancement of environmental quality. The B.Sc. (Environmental Science) graduates can be employed in various sectors across the country.
They will fit in the civil service as environmental protection officers, and as environmental science teachers for both primary and secondary school levels. Other graduates will find it rewarding to pursue further studies in environmental science and join universities as lecturers.
The programme is designed to provide a broad education for undergraduate shale. who wish to study environmental issues related to resource use, protection and environmental quality.
