Course Rationale
The study of economics is central to the understanding of the business market, trade, government policies international issues, globalization, health, development and environmental issues. These issues remain critical in the development agenda of developing countries, hence the need for trained personnel in various fields.
Graduates from this programme will be able to work in various fields including economic planning, policy analysis and trade, both public and private project monitoring and evaluation as well as teaching.

Target Groups
There exist great demand for graduates with degrees in economics both in private and public sectors. In the recent past financial institutions and public service commission (PSC Kenya) have employed large numbers of graduates in economics. Due to the growing number of public and private universities, there is need for qualified lecturers in economics. This programme is therefore proposed in response to market demand.
Programme Objectives
Upon successful completion of the prescribed course of study for Bachelor of Economics graduates will have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to:
Entry Requirements
i) KCSE or equivalent certificate with a minimum of C+ (plus) and grade C (plain) in both Mathematics and English or similar grades in an equivalent examination approved by the University Senate.
Or.
ii) KACE or equivalent Certificate with a minimum of 2 principles passes and O level Credit in Mathematics and English Language.
Or
iii) Diploma in relevant disciplines with a minimum of C- (minus) at KCSE from an institution recognized by the University Senate.
Entry via University Bridging
i) A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a minimum of C+ and lacking clusters subjects, Mathematics and English languages as in 2.7.1.1 (i) above. The Candidate must score at least a C- (minus) in the subject he/she is bridging in as in 2.7.1.1 (i) above;
ii) A holder of KACE certificate or equivalent with minimum of two principles and lacking O level clusters subject grades as in 2.7.1.1(ii) above. The candidate must score in the subject in which he/she is bridging in as 2.7.1.1 (ii)
Entry via Pre-university Programme
i) A holder of KCSE certificate or equivalent with a mean aggregate of C (plain) with C- (minus) in Mathematics and English
Application Guidelines:
**Application forms can be downloaded from www.mku.ac.ke or collected from the school campuses/ marketing centres. Duly filled application forms should be addressed to the Registrar – Academic Administration.
The following Documents should be made available:
– Copies of all academic certificates including secondary school certificates, Bachelors, Diplomas & Certificate level transcripts and certificates.
– One (1) recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of national I.D/Passport.
Application fee is as follows:
– a) Kshs 1000 for Certificate, Diploma and under- graduate programs for the East African applicants. USD 50 for the Non-East African Applicants.
– Kshs 2000 for Postgraduate programmes for East African Applicants. USD 100 for Non-East African Applicants.
NOTE:
Application for admission does not guarantee admission into the University for course applied for; this will be subject to fulfilment of all requirements and class size as approved by the University Senate.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs 91,100
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs 109,320
Students from Countries in the East African Community (EAC), pay the same amount as Kenyan Students. The six countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
NOTE:
– All international students (Non East African) are to pay additional (statutory fee, quality assurance & tuition fee) of 20% above the normal fee.
– The university fees payment can also be done in easy instalments within the semester. The instalments are as follows: 30% upon registration, 30%- second instalment, 20%-third instalment 20% – fourth instalment.
