Programme Overview

Rationale
Kenya is endowed with a rich biodiversity characterized by a broad range of flora, fauna and geomorphologic formations in addition to a growing cultural heritage. In the face of increasing human populations, diminishing wild habitats and increased demand for agricultural land, there is need to shift overdependence upon agriculture as the main engine of economic growth.

The opportunities for economic development in the ecotourism industry and associated hospitality service sectors have hitherto not been realized because of the dominance of mass tourism conventional tourism. in the tourism sector. There is need to develop human technical capacity to run, re-orientate planning of ecotourism and hospitality industries in order to enhance economic growth in Kenya.

Development of ecotourism offers opportunities for diversification and has the potential to transform local economies in addition to conserving our natural resources and cultural heritage. A certificate in Ecotourism and Hospitality Management is being offered by the University and a Bachelor of Science degree programme on the same has already been approved by the Senate.

This Diploma programme is a link between the certificate and degree courses. The availability of local advisory services and technical skills at the diploma level would enhance decision making, increase involvement of stakeholders and sharing of benefits. The programme will provide graduates with the requisite technical and managerial skills required in the development of the ecotourism hospitality industries.

Programme Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to: –
i) Train students in various aspects of Ecotourism and Hospitality Management, which will prepare them to provide quality services to customers in this industry.
ii) Equip students with theory and practical skills needed in the ecotourism and hospitality industry.
iii) Train students to develop and use ideas, concepts and skills to enable them venture in the ecotourism and hospitality business for self employment.

Curriculum

Course Structure and Duration
The Diploma programme will take a total of six 6. University semesters of class work and practical, translating into 122 Credit Factors C.Fs.. Industrial attachment in Ecotourism and Hospitality industries will be undertaken after semester 2 of the second year of the programme.Industrial attachment will consist of eight weeks in the field during which the student will be assessed by University examiners, student’s own reports and immediate supervisor’s report.
The first digit represents the year in which the course is offered. The second digit represents the nature of the course within the department , e.g. TOHM 0101 is a first year, introductory course and the first one in this series. The program code used is TOHM denoting Tourism and Hospitality Management followed by four digits, where the first digit denotes diploma level of training, second digit the year of study, The third digit represents the type of course based on the following categorization:-
0 Indicates introductory courses,
1 Principle courses,
2 Ecology,
3 Climate,
4 Management courses,
5 Applied courses,
6 Planning,
7 Research seminars, and students projects, and
8 Policy, law and administration.
While the fourth digit represents the serial number of the course e.g. TOHM 0101 will be a diploma level course, year I, introductory course and first one in that series.

Examination regulations
All examinations for the Diploma in Ecotourism and Hospitality Management shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in Egerton University Statute XXVIII.

Grading
The grading of examination for Diploma in Ecotourism and Hospitality Management shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII.

Graduation Requirements
To graduatea student shall be required to take and pass all required courses within the stipulated time.

Diploma Classification
The classification for Diploma in Ecotourism and Hospitality Management shall be in accordance with Egerton University Statute XXVIII for undergraduate students

Admission Requirements

Admission Requirements
To be eligible for admission into this programme,
– Candidates must have attained at least a mean grade of C at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education KCSE. level or other equivalent examination or qualification recognized by the Egerton University Senate.
– In addition, the applicant must have at least C+ in History or Geography, C+ English or Kiswahili; C- in Chemistry or C in Physical Science, C in Biology or C+ in Biological Science and D+ in Mathematics.
N.B: Interest in ecotourism hospitality industry and a foreign language will be an added advantage. Certificate holders from colleges recognized by Egerton University Senate will be considered with credit and above. Admission may extend to mature students.

Required Documents to be attached during Application include:
– Certified copies of your Result Slip, Certificates and Transcripts.
– ORIGINAL RECEIPT (Application Fee): KShs. 2,000 for ALL Degree Programmes and Kshs. 1,000 for all Undergraduate Diploma Programmes: Payable to; Account Name; Egerton University, Kenya Commercial Bank; Account No:1108550703.
– Copy of your National ID Card or Birth Certificate.

Online application procedure

– Simply complete the Egerton University Online Application form and upload all the necessary documents, so that it can be processed by the administrative department
– The application will be complete once all the necessary fees have been paid.

Offline Application Procedure

– The application form must be fully filled and the relevant academic documents attached. It must be returned to the admissions office of the university according to the deadline set by the admissions office.

Tuition Fees for Kenyan and East African Community Students: $857
Tuition Fees for International Students: $1,114

Tuition Fees for Kenyan Students = Kshs. 94,340
Tuition Fees for International Students = Kshs. 122,642
EAC (East African Community) Students pay the same amount as Kenyan students. Countries in the East African Community include; Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

NOTE:

– Foreign students out of the East African Community pay 30% more that the Kenyan students.
– The University reviews tuition fees on a regular basis.
