Programme Overview

Introduction
The process of development includes creating sustainable improvements in the quality of life for all people starting from the individual in the family through the community. The overarching aim of development is lifting living standards of individuals, families, and communities.

This encompasses bettering people’s health, providing educational opportunities, providing opportunities for all people to participate in public life, helping to ensure a clean environment, promoting inter generational understanding, equity and much more. Development has many facets: Human resources, technological, economic, social, cultural and biological.

This requires an in depth understanding of the family as a unit, community dynamics and the society in which all these factors operate. This curriculum therefore offers an interdisciplinary approach in addressing development issues with an aim of producing an interdisciplinary oriented graduate who is competent in addressing issues related to both family and community development.

Philosophy
Deployment of Community Development knowledge and skills uplifts living standards of individuals, families, and communities.

Rationale
There is an urgent need for comprehending the rapid changes affecting families, communities and the larger society. These changes are attributed to cultural, economic, technological, political, environmental and human factors at different levels in the society. In development, a range of complimentary policies including active participation of individuals and families at the grass root level is important for many interventions in communities’ sustainable development.

Development projects are more likely to succeed if they emphasis beneficiary participation at the individual, family and community levels. It is therefore the aim of this programme to develop strategies focusing on humans, as individuals in families at community and society levels. This curriculum is a result of a survey that was carried out by the department of Agriculture and Human Ecology Extension to determine the current needs in family and community development.
