Programme Overview

Encompassing the study of the molecular, cellular and physiological bases of life, Biochemistry has provided insights into many of the problems that have fascinated and perplexed biologists for generations. Its central role in biology ensures that there is a growing demand for graduates with expertise in this area. This course aims to provide you with a sound training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of this rapidly developing subject.

Mission Statement of the Department
To provide instruction in biochemistry at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to carry out scientific research adapted to the changing needs of the society. The undergraduate programme is designed to provide tools, techniques and thinking in such a way as to enable the graduates to find gainful employment in areas where biochemistry knowledge is required and to have the adequate background necessary for the pursuit of studies and research in biochemistry and related fields at the postgraduate level. The department, through its programmes, also seeks to satisfy the evolving needs of biochemistry users.

Objectives of the Degree Program
The Biochemistry degree programme trains biochemists with a modern view of the living world and its environment. It provides theoretical and practical training that enables the student to identify, isolate, purify, quantify and elucidate the structures of important bio-molecules from tissues and organs. A graduate in Biochemistry should understand, interpret and explain biochemical data that account for the complexity, diversity and unity of life forms; assess the dynamic processes of the transformation of matter and energy in living cells. Emphasis is laid on fundamental principles governing heredity, genetic information transfer, expression and regulation; chemical basis of the origin of life and evolution. Attention is paid to applications of biochemical concepts to improve production, enhance environmental management, service industries and biotechnology. A quantitative approach involving the use of chemical and physical principles is employed to explain underlying biological processes.

The curriculum is delivered by dedicated, motivated, research active staff, who provide up-to-date information in their respective disciplines. A range of teaching and assessment techniques are used and due emphasis is given to the development of generic transferable skills (IT, communication, teamwork, self-management, problem solving) for the employment market.

The school has very good science labs for practical works in all science fields offered.

Minor in Medical Laboratory Technology:
The professional minor in Medical Laboratory Technology is open to students, especially in the department of Life Sciences. A total of 6 courses are offered, two each session totalling 36 Credits. These courses are tailored to orientate students towards professionalisation. It is hoped that at the end of the programme graduates may find useful employment, or be self-employed using the knowledge and skills acquired from this minor

Admission Requirements

Candidates must have passed at least 2 GCE Advanced Level subjects, one in Biology, Botany, Zoology or Human Biology, and the other in another science subject. The Baccalaureate series C and D are also acceptable.

A message from the school about the 2020-2021 academic year reads:
Cognizant of the fact that the people of the Northwest and Southwest regions have been groaning under the weight of the socio-political crisis for close to four years now, and that currently the entire country is in the grips of the coronavirus (covid-19) pandemic which both have far-reaching economic implications, the Bishops of the Ecclesiastical Province of Bamenda have decided to grant certain percentage discounts on tuition fees to the ‘early birds’ who enrol on any of the school’s degree programmes, beginning next academic year till further notice.
