The B.Sc. in Animal Products Technology is designed to provide knowledge and skills in processing of various animal products with the main objective of adding value for higher returns. To be able to achieve this objective, the students are exposed to basic knowledge in animal production science, biochemical and physical characteristics of animal products, handling techniques and processing technologies for increasing the values of these products.
Similarly, the students are taught courses in marketing and entrepreneurship to be able to advise and engage in the processing of the products as a profitable business. The mission of the department of Animal Science with regard to this program is to promote the processing of animal products as a profitable enterprise by producing highly competent advisors.
The course targets to produce service providers in the production and processing of animal products (meat, milk, fish, silk, honey, reproductive biotechnology products, leather, wool and animal by-products.
Animal Products and Technology utilization leads to diversification of income generation sources and environmental conservation.
Kenya economy is mainly based on agriculture and in the last 3 decades much has been achieved in terms of animal production following the application of new technologies in livestock management. Availability of more products requires value addition to diversify their utilization and extend their shelf life.
This is expected to improve the livelihood of stakeholders (Livestock farmers and consumers) Decisions of proper and sustainable processing of these products require well-trained personnel in processing technologies
Loading and Mode of Delivery The teaching for the degree shall extend for a period of not less than four (4) academic years, each consisting of two semesters. The period following the end of the second semester of the third year shall be devoted to field practical work (Industrial Attachment) Each semester will consist of seventeen (17) weeks, with fifteen (15) weeks teaching and two (2) weeks examinations.
The weighting of courses is in terms of credit factors. One credit factor is equivalent to fifteen (15) lecture hours or thirty (30) practical (laboratory or tutorial or seminar) hours. To graduate, a student must successfully complete 185.5 Credit factors OR Diploma holders or equivalent candidates may transfer up to 30% of credit factors to degree curriculum from their diploma program under guidelines specified by the CU Senate.The programme shall be delivered through face-to-face teaching and learning.
All candidates admitted to the degree program of Animal Products Technology must satisfy the minimum University entry requirement of C+ as stipulated in the common university entrance regulations. Applicants must have passed with C+ in Biology or Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Physical Science and mathematics or Physics. Admission may be granted to diploma holders who have passed with distinction and credit or their equivalents, in Animal Husbandry, Animal Health, Dairy Science, Food Science and Technology, Agriculture and related disciplines from recognized universities and colleges. Such cases will be treated on individual merits

– One recent passport size photograph (write your name on reverse side)
– Copy of the National Identity Card or Birth Certificate
– Preferred Campus should be indicated on the application form
– Certified copies of certificates and original fee payment receipt MUST be attached to the application form and returned latest two weeks prior to the commencement dates given for the programmes
Expected Learning Outcomes
By end of the program, the students should be able to:
– Acquire knowledge in production and processing of different animal products
– Apply the acquired knowledge in animal product processing in order to add value and ensure their quality
– Use the acquired knowledge to develop appropriate technologies in animal products processing to suite local and international markets
– Become successful entrepreneurs in animal products processing.
